culturae.

Merriam-Webster defines culture as “enlightenment and excellence of taste acquired by intellectual and aesthetic training”.

In an ever-evolving society, the importance of its people evolving with it has never been more pertinent. Technology, skills, and the requirements of overall life experience are rising at a rapid pace; it’s our job by bettering ourselves to continue keeping up with those standards.

We, as human beings, can better ourselves by going to college, obtaining key vocational skills and working up the “corporate ladder” until we reach a level that we desire.

Yet, with that said, there is a component that is often overlooked in our quests and endeavors: Culture.

Upon moving to the Midwest in pursuit of my dreams, I’ve been granted many different opportunities to travel and explore the area – an experience I was never awarded where I grew up. In just the last two days, I’ve been to five different states.

College courses and experiences in the classroom have given me an education in formal, professional way. The importance of knowing how to write a resume or how to concisely share a thesis cannot be understated. However, the experiences I’ve been exposed to as a result of traveling have been equally as beneficial.

To put it simply: in today’s society, it’s not enough to simply be “book smart”. I’ve found a key facet of being truly educated goes beyond what a textbook can teach you. “Street smarts” teach a variety of skills ranging from thinking on your feet to knowing your limits as a productive, functioning member of our modern society.

A person can know every bit of data from every textbook in print – but when unable to use it in a situation where it would need to be applicable, it serves as a multitude of moot points.

Intro

Hello. I see you’ve stumbled upon my blog.

The writings on this site from here on out will be an immersive, introspective view on a topic I always found to be an abstract concept: following your dreams.

Currently, as I’m writing this, I’m doing just that. I decided to take a big leap of faith, move across the country and test my limits – all for the idea of following my dreams.

Growing up, I was always bombarded with after-school specials, PSAs and countless lectures from my mother about following my dreams, no matter what.

But what does it mean exactly to “follow your dreams”? To not settle for the status quo?

This blog seeks to answer that question with a simple motto: To live and let live. I’m currently presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, one that many others would kill for, and musings written across these pages will reflect just that. I’ll relate each experience during this time to many I’ve had before or relate them to a particular topic I find poignant.

Every day, while adventurous and exciting, is equally as terrifying as the last. The Midwest is a much different landscape than the one of my small New Mexico town and I’ve got a long road ahead of me. I hope you’ll sit back and enjoy this journey of life alongside with me, too.
